About the ACS Hospital Systems Capacity Building Initiative

About the ACS Hospital Systems Capacity Building Initiative

The American Cancer Society Hospital Systems Capacity Building (HSCB) Initiative incorporates cancer prevention and screening interventions into hospital mission, investment, and operational practices. The HSCB initiative will focus on three priority areas - HPV vaccination, colorectal cancer screening rates, and breast health equity.

The Communities of Practice (COP) project is part of the HSCB initiative and is a five-year partnership between the ACS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase the capacity of hospital systems to build partnerships to implement interventions for cancer prevention and screening. Twenty selected hospital systems will build communities of practice to share best practices and lessons learned and to build an evidence base for increasing HPV vaccinations, colorectal cancer screening rates, and breast health equity.

The Community of Practice project is at the intersection of the ACS, participating hospital systems, state and local health departments, and community partners.

Project Objectives

  • Secure leadership support for practice changes to increase cancer screening and vaccination rates in target populations
  • Assess and share data related to screening and vaccination rates
  • Create a comprehensive collaborative action plan led by a core team with input from the ACS and community partners
  • Create a culture of team-based quality improvement
  • Execute sustainable and meaningful process improvement
